Tell us a bit about your background and your projects so far.
My background in sex and sexual health dates back to 2003 when I co-founded an online sex toy shop called fucktheshop.com. Along with a colleague in guerilla marketing, we decided to create a provocative name to generate publicity but ultimately had to change it to the shop due to media reluctance. We then used our savings to produce two adult sex education films called "Modern Loving", featuring real couples. These films can still be found on Amazon if searched for. In 2022, I partnered with someone new and together we launched a podcast called "Sex Advice for Seniors". The launch of the podcast coincided with the release of a film, ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’, about an older woman who hires a young sex worker to discover the pleasures of sex, which led to interviews with the Independent and the Telegraph among other media outlets. We also created a TikTok channel to promote the podcast, and currently have over 52k followers and millions of views.
How did you get into this industry? Has it been an easy industry to get into or have you had many challenges?
I have always been a trailblazer, fearlessly blazing my own path and taking on new challenges head-on. When I first got into the sextech industry, I quickly realized that it was not an easy feat. The industry is often shrouded in taboo and is not widely accepted by mainstream channels, making it difficult to market and promote products and services related to sex. Despite the obstacles, I was determined to make a name for myself. With my background in PR, I was able to navigate the challenges and find innovative ways to raise awareness, but it was still a difficult journey. It's a constant battle but it's worth it as I am passionate about this industry.
How long did it take you to be where you are now? What was the biggest obstacle?
It's been an exciting journey to get to where I am today with my podcast. I launched it in early 2022 and have been thrilled by the level of engagement and interest it has received. However, like any journey, it hasn't been without its challenges. The biggest obstacle I've faced so far has been monetizing the podcast. But, I am constantly looking for new opportunities and ways to push the boundaries. Recently, I've partnered with an agency to help source brand deals and partnerships, which has been a game-changer for us. It's a constant journey of learning and growth, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
What are the challenges of being in the industry you are in?
We’ve very niche. We’re tackling a topic, sex and older people, that has been taboo forever. We’re breaking new ground by being open and honest about sexual pleasure when older.
My biggest achievements to date have been the growth and success of the TikTok channel. It's incredibly exciting to see the channel reach over 52k followers and receive positive feedback from our audience. The fact that we are able to help older people find a happier, healthier sex life through our podcast and TikTok channel is incredibly fulfilling. It's a reminder that the work we do is making a real impact on people's lives and it's incredibly gratifying to be a part of that.
What are the projects you are currently working on?
It’s under wrap but we’re very excited.
Is the #WomenInTech movement important to you and if yes, why?
Absolutely, the #WomenInTech movement holds great importance to me. As someone who works in the sextech industry, I understand the challenges that women face when it comes to promoting their products and services. The industry is still not widely accepted and it can be difficult to get the word out. I am passionate about leveling the playing field and providing a platform for women in the industry to showcase their work and reach their target audience. We are dedicated to empowering women in tech and helping them succeed.
What will be the key trends in your industry in the next five years and where do you see them heading?
I believe that in the next five years, the sextech industry will see a shift toward a focus on inclusivity and diversity. Specifically, there will be a greater emphasis on catering to the needs of women in terms of sexual health and pleasure. This includes moving away from traditional, phallocentric designs and towards more ergonomic and body-sensitive products. Additionally, there will be a growing trend towards more natural, holistic approaches to sexual wellness, as well as a greater emphasis on sustainability in product design and manufacturing. Another trend is the use of advanced technologies such as AI, VR, and AR to enhance the user experience. As more and more people become comfortable with technology and its integration into their daily lives, the demand for high-tech sex toys will increase.
What is the most important piece of advice you could give to anyone who wants to start a career in this industry?
Like any other business, you need to be solving a genuine problem for which a large number of people are willing to pay for the solution.
Who are three inspirational women in your respective industry you admire?
Esther Perel, psychotherapist
Sam Evans – founder, Jo Divine
