Applications are now open for the next 5G and IoT Accelerator at the CW 5G Private Testbed in Cambridge. Watch the latest informational video Demonstrations and outcomes from the CW 5G IoT Private Testbed.
Since 2021 we’ve completed three twelve-week accelerators on CW’s Cambridge-based 5G testbed and our team is now on the hunt for new partners to join our fourth accelerator, running from May to September 2023.
We have previously worked with solution providers to validate 5G in their products. The focus of our next programme will be participants based in the UK and mainland Europe, targeting Smart Industry innovations using large private networks. Product applications are relevant across all sectors wherever private networks are used – think healthcare in hospitals, manufacturing in factories, retail in warehouses, education on campuses, and sports, and entertainment in stadiums. Even utilities out in the field; our testbed includes an outdoor private network.
The 5G and IoT Accelerator programme offers access to our 5G testbed in Cambridge, business monitoring, and links to CW’s extensive network of member companies. CW’s broad media engagement has resulted in previous residents being featured by high-profile media outlets such as ITV News, BBC Click, Forbes, Reuters, and The Economist.
Some of the results achieved by the last cohort included successful demonstrations of the following over our 5G private network:
Live remote operation of a connected autonomous vehicle on roads in the Cambridge Science Park by Conigital – a British driverless vehicle company, automating the way people and goods move, through a vision of greener, more efficient mobility, for all. Recently secured £32.6M with partners for projects from Innovate UK and Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles
Warehouse robots moving objects and displaying real-time data via the cloud network by PHINXT Robotics – a London-based early-stage business, that develops hybrid-connected robotic logistics platforms, aiming to bring synchronised robotics to every warehouse. Recently secured £608k pre-seed investment.
Remote XR medical training with physicians from Addenbrooke's Hospital by i3 Simulations – an immersive training and education solutions company, specialising in healthcare training using Extended Reality (XR) technology. Recently nominated for “One to Watch” Award at Medilink Midlands Business Awards 2023.
“The accelerator has allowed access to a private 5G network and configured for our specific needs, with expert support enabling us to configure and assess our self-driving and teleoperation system to validate our assumptions on performance. Testing our solution in a live public environment would not have been possible without this support and infrastructure.” - Tom Robinson, Technical Director, Conigital
“Small and medium-sized warehouses struggle to embrace robotic automation because of the associated IT complexity. 5G allows us to run our entire platform in the cloud and that's a game changer! We have wanted to explore this opportunity for a long time and the accelerator gave us the chance to work with the best possible partners we could hope for.” - Yanwen Chen, CEO, PHINXT ROBOTICS
"The accelerator has formed the backbone of our research and development towards i3 Connect, the service we plan to launch powered by streaming technologies. This will revolutionise the way that healthcare training is delivered to medical professionals, making it affordable and more accessible. The accelerator has been instrumental in bringing together our technology and strategy in such a short space of time." - Devi Kolli, Chief Executive Officer, i3 Simulations
“5G brings more than super high performance and connectivity for our smartphones; it also brings super low power, reliable and fast communications for business-critical and safety real-time operations, such as remote control. We’re delighted to share how the businesses have used our independent 5G testbed to bring their research, development, and deployment of 5G-based solutions into real-life, practical situations, including full road-testing using the testbed’s new outdoor reach – all adding to the exciting future of UK plc.” - Abhi Naha, CCO, CW
